Patch 4.12, a delayed walk through
It finally happened!
So in this patch the first thing that strikes me and everyone else is the addition of jungle timers. This is a feature I have known about a lot of people wanting for a long time, it stops the need for these add-ons and game mods giving some “lazy” summoners an edge (because now we all get to be lazy). It also clears up a lot of chat and saves a lot of time and in some games even flaming for checking timers. Some argue this patch means nothing, and maybe for higher ability players this change won’t affect them too much as they clearly can track jungle timers very well, however I do not believe this is who this change is primarily aimed at. I believe this tweak makes the jungle more accessible to newer players, both to the game and to that role if they have not tried it yet. It means you have less to think about and can focus more on mechanics. I can’t really see anyone having a problem with this change.
Baby bots have been added called “Intro Bots” for the n00bs to play against, IP rewards get reduced after level 10 including no first win of the day after this point so it can’t be exploited.
This patch also sees a lot of bug fixes both in-game and on actual champions helping things play smoother in games and have less head scratching and screaming “WTF!!!”.
The next thing to talk about in this patch are buffs, I am going to order these from most influential and game changing to the least.
The biggest game changer I feel is to Lucian, so I am going to devote an entire section just to his changes. Everyone has been screaming “OP” for the last few patches now when it comes to Lucian and yet oddly his ban rate doesn’t actually seem to reflect how much he is stomping solo queue right now. That aside I’m sure there are many who don’t play Lucian breathing a sigh of relief after this change.
Despite this being what I believe to overall be a buff a key weakness has been introduced to Lucian by lowering his range. I mean it’s about time we saw a flaw in the champion that we all see in our dreams and it means that an experienced AD carry can exploit this weakness to win the lane. The range has been nerfed from 450 to 400, which definitely will sting.
However almost every other aspect of the champion has been buffed, including his base movement speed increasing from 330 to 335, his base health from 470 to 500 and his base attack damage from 49 to 52, which is a seriously high buff to his early game, which I believe to be to make him much more of a threat early.
Changes to his spells include a reduced mana cost on his Q (Piercing Light) and also now hitting the full damage on minions rather than 75%. This buff is traded for a reduced range from on the spell. This once again making him much more powerful earlier in the game and also adding the ability to slightly better by granting him full damage with his Q.
His final change is to his E (Relentless Pursuit) where hitting off his double hit passive reduces the cooldown of this spell by 2 seconds (one for each bullet) and this is doubled against champions. His mana costs have been removed from this spell and the cooldown has been reduced. Dashing resets his auto attacks and killing with his ultimate no longer resets the cooldown. This makes this spell a lot more skilful and now Lucian in general will take a lot more skill to play well with, but those who have that skill should be having a lot more fun.
Someone else who has had quite a big buff is Alistar, making him a lot more viable in preparations for worlds. His jungle potential has been hit hard (but it is still there) and he has instead seen a few changes to make him a more likely choice as a support. His passive no longer deals double damage to monsters and so his jungle clear will take a little longer. This is compensated by his Q (Pulverize) now has a slight reduction in mana cost early, and a quite significant one later on. It also only knocks up for a second with a 0.5 second stun later, making your Yasuo dream team’s window a slightly smaller one. His W (Headbutt) also has reduced mana costs and his R (Unbreakable Will) now has no start-up and is a consistent 70% damage reduction. This I feel makes him a much more likely pick for a support, however I don’t believe the odds are good on seeing him in jungle any time soon.
Not much to say really, he can now buff himself with his W (Essence Flux) like he can his allies, meaning fast fingers pay off, so the real pro Ezreal players will just hurt that little bit more then they spring on top of you from a bush.
Some small buffs have been made to a few champions also. Ahri’s Q (Orb of Deception) has been buffed by reducing its mana costs and increasing its AP ratio by 0.25. Garen can now use Ravenous / Tiamat whilst spinning in his E (Judgement). Kha’zix has received a damage buff on his Q (Taste Their Fear) by 15 physical damage per level. These buffs are all minor but ensure that these champions do not fall out of favour.
Well… You either laugh or you cry here, this bit is always like marmite, if your it’s your champion you’ll cry, if it’s you’re counter your sides will be hurting. No one has been hurt this patch really, it seems to be more touch ups this patch.
Well I don’t know what the hell is going on here, but he’s being nerfed again. His W (Nether Blade) cooldown has been increased by 3 and the slow on his E (Force Pulse) the slow duration has been reduced to 1 second, but the slow amount has been increased. This nerf isn’t too hard, but it is certainly a nerf. I don’t think this champion will ever be balanced.
These are often some of the more influential changes to the game that can get completely overlooked, but if you have an edge on these changes and don’t just stick to your build like glue you can surprise anyone.
Everyone who hated the Bloodthirster rejoice as it has been buffed, increasing its lifesteal by 5% at the cost of making it unique (as if you would stack it anyway). Its shield now caps at 350, but it decays over 25 seconds rather than 15 (as if it didn’t feel constant already). Many complained about the new Bloodthirster and I think this should now pacify everyone who though AD carry was a broken role for a time.
I think this should actually now begin to catch on, the desperately needed alternative to a Manamune was an obvious item to include, but I think they overestimated how valuable that mana sustain really was and so didn’t pack it with enough AD, this changes in this patch by replacing the pickaxe it needed to be built with a B.F. Sword to give it a bonus 20 AD, however the 750 gold increase may be a slight bit too much, but all shall be revealed.
I hate to sound like the actual official patch notes, but just a bonus 10 AP to try and persuade your supports to be less selfish and buy it.
This has been buffed by changing its long sword required to build it with a pickaxe, increasing its AD by 5 and its cost by 100, making it hit harder as you build it up.
Around the Grounds
Changes in this patch affect other fields of justice too.
Twisted Treeline, Crystal Scar & Howling Abyss
On just Twisted Treeline both Ichors now only last 3 minutes instead of 4 and Spirit of the Ancient Golem now acts like less of a warding trinket and now more like a sweeping lens, revealing nearby traps passively, and an active to reveal stealthed enemies.
On Twisted Treeline and Crystal Scar as well, Lord Van Damm’s Pillager has had its damage increased by 10 and Kayle’s ultimate has a longer cooldown early.
Throwing Howling Abyss into the mix now and Grez’s Spectral Lantern has been remade, so it is now only available on Twisted Treeline and is now made by Madred’s Razors, a Long Sword, a Dagger and 180 gold. It gives the user 15 AD and a bonus 30% attack speed it carries over the passive Maim and gives 30% bonus gold from monsters too and also has the same new passive and active as Spirit of the Ancient Golem. The Lightbringer has also been changed, now being build out of a Wicked Hatchet, a Cloak of Agility and 350 gold giving 30 AD and 30% critical strike chance to the owner and critical strikes now apply a bleed for 90% of the users AD over 3 seconds and reveals them for this period also.
