Upcoming League of Legends changes
Meddler announced that Riot is looking to buff tanky junglers in the near future. When asked, Meddler said:
“We're aiming to buff a number of tanks in the jungle in patch 5.5 and/or patch 5.6 (5.3's the current live patch, design work on 5.4's just finished for context). To start with that'll involve looking at tanks that are struggling a bit (definitely Zac, potentially Nautilus, Nunu etc).”
This will be a welcome change for many. Nautilus in particular has us at LoLBoost very excited. When he was first released, Naut was one of the strongest junglers, tanky, mobile and with an arsenal of CC. When you ganked, you got a kill. We are hoping that Riot will do him justice and give him a decent buff, at least enough so he will be viable at high elo. If Naut get’s a decent buff we recommend all jungle mains to go to our LoL Coaching and select a jungler coach. After a few lessons with the new Naut you will most likely stomp your enemies and raise several divisions, if not a whole tier!
When Meddler was asked about Rammus and the lovable mummy, he replied with:
“Rammus and Amumu will both be looked at to see what they need, though potentially as part of a second set (whether in the same patch cycle or a later one) depending on how long work on the first set takes.”
Both Mumu and Rammus are fun junglers who used to be able to carry their teams to victory fairly easily. Some of LoLBoost’s boosters still boost a lot with both champions, and one of our Jungle mains has a fairly unbeaten record with Rammus in the jungle. He played around with both AP rammus and, of course, the more used tank Rammus, and he wrote a very in depth champion guide on Rammus himself, which has helped a lot of players climb the ladder.
It will be very interesting to see how these new changes will affect the meta. We suspect some tanky junglers will be slightly more viable, but if we look at Riot’s track record so far, we risk the buffs being pretty insignificant and we will probably see more nerfs affect champions that really dont need to be nerfed. Riot seems to want all champions to do as little damage as possible, and they go out of their way nerfing any AP champion that does any bit of damage, meanwhile leaving champions like Gnar to one shot squishes if fed, and, unlike an AP carry, gnar can build tanky while doing so.
Let us take a look at a short video where a fed Gnar lasts way longer than he should (considering he is up against and 11/4 Leblanc and a fed Draven, in addition to Leona and Xin), video can be found here
Almost any other champion would be blown up very fast, but not Gnar. Riot has in the past expressed their concern with champions being able to one shot enemies when Fed, but they seem to mostly want to nerf Midlaners or high damage toplaners, even some high damage supports (Annie, we are talking about you), meanwhile they are leaving champions who are both tanky and very high in damage to wreck havoc upon the world. I think most people can agree that the champions they find the most annoying isn’t simply the champions that has super high damage when fed, it is those that has super high damage and WILL NOT DIE. Most people agree that season 1 and 2 of LoL was much more fun than it is now, simply because there were so many “OP” champions. If you were good you could take akali and completely destroy the whole enemy team. Playing assassins used to be much more fun, just look at Twitch and Eve. Very annoying heroes to be sure, but they were incredibly fun to play.
That being said, it looks like Veigar is going to get some love in the next patch. They are nerfing his E but buffing his Q. Riot is not comfortable with a straight up buff in case Veigar get’s OP, so it looks like they are pre-nerfing so they wont have to do it later.
In addition, Riot is working on some Azir buffs, as they feel the recent nerfs (duh) hit him too hard.
There is also a new item being tested on the PBE called Mandrake Ward.
Xypherous underlines this is a trial item on PBE, and it is subject to changes. They are currently working on polishing the item, and they are curious to see how summoners will be using the item. It is meant as an early game ward to protect against junglers, without revealing their health or path. To explain, the ward will ONLY ping when an enemy is within range. It will not give you vision or show you the enemy. This would indeed be an interesting addition to League of Legends and the meta.
