Warding Like a Champion

Make Your Wards Last Longer and Win Games!

Help with warding in the different stages in the game.

Right now in League of Legends, the number of wards that you can hold is limited. This means that you have to ward more efficiently and make sure that you place your wards correctly the first time. You are only allowed to have 1 pink on the field personally and allowed to a maximum of 2 pinks in your inventory at one time.

Pinks also give true vision, but they are visible to everyone if they walk near it making it easily dealt with and destroyed. This turns people away from buying pinks since most people feel that it is 100 gold that is going to get destroyed in a few seconds. This is where people fail to realize the true strength of the pink ward.

The pinks have no timer and will never go away unless another pinked is placed or it is destroyed. The regular sight ward has a gold efficiency of 25 gold per minute since it lasts 3 minutes and costs 75 gold. For only 25 more gold, the vision ward has a gold efficiency that can be brought down to levels far below the regular ward. If a vision ward lasts 5 minutes, it cost only 20 gold per minute instead of 25 gold which is cheaper and also gave the ability to destroy other wards meaning that it most likely brought in some gold as well. If the pink ward lasts 10 minutes then it was only 10 gold per minute to keep you and your team safe and to move smartly.

So where do you place your pinks so they aren't discovered but still remain effective? There's two spots that fit this criteria.

These two spots seem obvious, but I can't tell you how many times people walk right by these bushes without checking them. The wards here tend to last on average 7 minutes which already makes it more cost effective than the sight ward. Also, this pink monitors roaming mid laners, jungler movement to mid, bot, and even your jungle. If someone discovers the pink, they are out in the open trying to destroy your ward and in this instance is where you use their location to your advantage and get your jungler to help kill them since there are no towers near for them to retreat to. Just don't chase too much or their jungler and bot/top will come to help.

These aren't the only locations to place pinks, baron and dragon pits are alright spots to place pinks since it helps clear wards, but that is better suited for the red trinket if your team-mates have one. It is also important to note that if the enemy team has a champion with invisibility like Rengar/Kha'Zix/Akali/Twitch/Evelynn, carrying an extra pink for a teamfight is a good idea.

This guy lasts 3 minutes and is invisible so the only way to get rid of them is use a pink or red trinket. In season 4, it is only possible to have 3 green wards in your inventory and on the map at once. You can place these more freely than the pink wards since they are a bit cheaper and you can place more of them at once. There are several key places to place these wards and each warding location will be more or less important depending on how late into the game it is.

Warding here as a mid laner or jungler is very important, this ward gives you sight of wraith camp, as well as 4 different pathways for their jungler to walk through. This ward works on both purple and blue side. Red jungle side no longer has the most camps any more but junglers still spend most of their time hanging around their red side since many people opt out of getting the Wight camp. This will let you know their jungler's location so if you want to play aggressive mid you'll be a bit safer.

Tri-bush is an important ward as a top-laner and bot as well. Blue team should ward top tri-bush and botlane should ward their tri-bush. This way for top lane, their jungler will most likely walk through it and let you know that they are coming to gank. The bot-side tri-bush ward allows you to make sure their mid laner or jungler doesn't roam and gank from behind.

As for Purple Team, warding tribush top is just as important as blue side since their jungler can swing around to gank through it, but if there's a ward placed just like the one in the first picture, then you should see their jungler swinging around. Also, warding tri-bush as bot should be done when you are pushed up since this is the fastest and most effective route for their jungler to go through. If not pushed the ward should be placed up river.

These wards should be placed in the late-mid and late game. This is because this is the time where you will be roaming as a team and if you are pushing and this ward watches 4 pathways as to warn your team if a flank is coming while pushing one of those towers.

These are wards for dragon and baron. Now, at first glance it appears that the wards are not living up to all of their potential since they are placed in the corner. This is true, but what is happening is that if their team pinks dragon or baron not deep enough inside the pit, this ward will not appear and thus give them the false illusion that there are no wards and allows your team to set up for a steal. The vision system also allows you to still see enemies walk by if they are close enough, but it's not guaranteed so do not rely on it.

These are 4 spots where warding them is important from the late-mid and late game. At this point in the game, baron will be highly contested so the blue team side wards will allow vision of the pathway of the blue team. This allows you to back off baron if the enemy is approaching or engage on them since you know exactly where they are. The red team side blue buff ward is mostly for mid game since it gives vision to the paths for dragon. It is still important to ward the blue buff jungle on both sides anyways since it can allow for you and your team to catch the enemy out of position.

These are both upriver wards for top and bot that watch several different paths. First of all for top lane, it watches junglers coming from tri-bush, river, and sometimes junglers that go through the wall like J4, Zac, and Vi (although it's not 100% guarenteed). These are wards for the early game when laning phase is still going on since as the game moves on, there will be more crucial places where wards will need to be placed. Bot side ward in this case watches an objective such as dragon that is sought after during the early phases of the game and spots junglers coming from their blue to gank bot.

There are a few spots that were left out, but these are the main warding points that you should aim to gain vision over and by making sure that you have every movement of their team locked down, you'll find yourself getting more victories and watch your ELO rise.
